How to Perform a FAILOVER with Zerto

 Hi all,

Today we will discuss a scenario, How to perform a Failover with help of Zerto Virtual Replication.

Previous posts on Zerto,

  1. Disaster Recovery with Zerto
  2. Install Zerto ZVM 5.0 for vSphere Environment
  3. Install Zerto Virtual Replication Appliance VRA on VMware ESXi
  4. Configure Zerto Virtual Protection Groups VPG
  5. Create new Repository for Zerto Backup
  6. How to Perform a Test FAILOVER with Zerto on VMware Environment
  7. How to Perform a FAILOVER/MOVE with Zerto

I would like to make this scenario in to three parts.

  1. Failover from protected site to Recovery site without reverse replication.
  2. Once the protected site comes back make the changes in VPG and meet the SLA.
  3. Perform a Failback from recovery site to protected site.

Below screenshot shows, I have two vCenter Servers one is production site and another one for DR site. I have only one VM in the protected site vGyan-Prod-VM-01.

Zerto Virtual Replication is MEETING SLA, so we are good to perform a Failover.

Let’s start, Log in to your protected site ZVM, in the right bottom select failover mode as LIVE and click on FAILOVER button.

Once the Failover window opens, Select required VPG’s. I am selecting all available VPG’s for FAILOVER.

Click Next to continue:-

In the Execution Parameters tab, I am selecting one available check point and not enabling Reverse Protection.

Click Next to continue:-

Click on START FAILOVER button to initiate failover.

vGyan-Prod-VM-01 is moved to DR site, As per the VPG settings vGyan-Prod-VM-01 IP changed to 192.168.0.151.

In the ZVM console, VPG is NOT MEETING SLA. because our production site is down. Once the production site comes back we need to edit VPG.

Assume our production site is become active, we need to failback to Production site from DR site.

First we need to make some changes in the VPG (Virtual Protected Group).

Open VPG for editing, in the REPLICATION tab change Recovery site as your production site, in my environment it’s vGyan-ProductionSite.

Select any Host/Cluster and any available Datastore from your Production Site.

Host: vGyan-CL-01

Datastore: vGyan-NFS-CL01

Click Next to continue:-

In the RECOVERY tab, change Failover/Move Network and Failover Test Network to Production site network.

Failover/Move Network: DC1-Prod-VM

Failover Network: DC1-Prod-VM

Click Next to continue:-

In NICs tab, Edit VM network property’s.

I am providing the Failover IP as 192.168.0.145.

Click next to continue:-

In the SUMMARY tab, Verify all the details which we provided in the VPG.

Now we are going to replicate from DR Site to Protected Site.

vGyan-DRSite to vGyan-ProductionSite.

Click on Done to finish the VPG edit.

Once the Delta Syncing completed from DR site to Protected site we can find MEETING SLA in Zerto ZVM console.

Now we are good to go with a Failback from DR site to Production site.

Initiated a Live FAILOVER from DR site to Production site.

Once the failover window opens, Select required VPG’s. I am selecting my VPG’s for FAILOVER.

Click Next to continue:-

In the Execution Parameters tab, I am selecting one available check point and not enabling Reverse Protection because its on lab environment. In production environment you can go with reverse protection to DR site.

Click Next to continue:-

Click on START FAILOVER button to initiate Fail back.

vGyan-Prod-VM-01 is moved to Production site, As per the VPG settings vGyan-Prod-VM-01 IP changed to 192.168.0.145.

We successfully performed a LIVE FAILOVER and LIVE FAILBACK.

We will discuss more on Zerto in upcoming posts.
